What Is Capsular Contracture?
Capsular contracture may be the most common complication of breast augmentation, but, fortunately, it is rare. It can occur regardless of the type of implants a patient chooses, whether silicone or saline. The body naturally forms a capsule of scar tissue around the implant, just as it may do around any foreign body. Usually, this capsule stays soft and flexible, harmless. Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue becomes overly firm, and it squeezes on the implant. There are varying degrees of firmness that may occur, with the worst causing deformation of one or both breasts.
Symptoms of capsular contracture include:
- Breast pain
- Firmness
- High-riding breast
- Asymmetry
- Tightness in the breast
- Change in breast shape
How Long Does A Breast Implant Removal Procedure Take?
It can take from 1 to 3 hours to perform breast implant removal. Your surgeon should discuss your estimated surgery time based on the technique applied to your procedure.
How Is A Breast Implant Removal Procedure Performed?
Breast implant removal typically takes place in a hospital or an accredited surgery center using general anesthesia. Surgeons try to perform the procedure using the same incision lines created during breast augmentation. Explantation is generally a straightforward procedure. Access is created through incisions, and the implant or implants are removed. However, patients may want additional procedures to sustain an appealing breast shape.
After removing breast implants, a surgeon may also remove the capsule that formed around the foreign body. This is necessary when capsular contracture has occurred. The procedure may also involve revision breast augmentation, which inserts new implants. Patients often choose a different size implant to either reduce or enlarge their breasts. Finally, breast implant removal may include a breast lift, with or without new breast implants. This technique restores optimal height and shape to the breasts by correcting loose and saggy skin.

Breast Implant Removal Procedure Recovery
Patients should schedule one to two weeks off work for a comfortable, stress-free recovery after breast implant removal. Prescription pain medication helps sustain optimal comfort for the initial recovery period. Within a few days, patients are usually ready to transition to over-the-counter medication. Until the incisions heal, they must be protected from excessive motion, abrasion, and force. Patients may be advised to sleep on their backs and avoid strenuous physical activity for 4 to 6 weeks.
