Acne is a problem that can have a profound impact on a teen or young adult. While persistent breakouts are often viewed as a normal part of growing up, there are good reasons to seek the care of a board-certified dermatologist for this problem. If you or someone you love has acne, schedule a visit at our office near Las Vegas if:
Home remedies and over-the-counter medications are not improving skin health.
- Acne is causing scars to develop.
- Dark patches are appearing on the skin after an acne flare-up.
- Breakouts are severe and include cysts, pustules, or deep nodules.
Most of all, it is a person’s general sense of well-being that should dictate a visit to a dermatologist. If you or your loved one feel uncomfortable about the persistence of acne and are trying to hide your skin (a nearly impossible fete), give us a call. A thorough examination can lead to an accurate diagnosis of which type of acne has developed and how to best treat it.
Types Of Acne
In the broader sense, acne is acne; it is a condition caused by cellular debris, bacteria, and oil within the pores of the skin. More specifically, acne falls into one of several categories related to the type of breakout that occurs. These include:
- Pimples or whiteheads. The average pimple has a white “tip.” This is referred to as a comedone, a basic lesion that involves a clogged hair follicle.
- Also a comedone, the blackhead is an open-surface lesion that can be seen at the opening of a pore. Beneath the “black” head of debris is dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria.
- This type of comedone is one that has become inflamed. Inflammation presents as a pink or red bump on the skin. Sensitivity may be felt on or around papules.
- Pustules look like whiteheads surrounded by a red ring of inflammation.
- Nodules are hard bumps of inflamed tissue that form deep beneath the skin. They are often painful and firm to the touch.
- Severe acne is often referred to as cystic acne, where pimples look red and inflamed. Some look pus-filled. Cystic acne carries a risk of scarring.
Acne Treatment That Works
Prolonged or persistent acne breakouts need treatment in order to avoid scarring and emotional upset. There are several ways that a dermatologist may treat acne, but treatment will always revolve around the factors that cause breakouts. These include clogged pores, bacteria, and oil production. In our office, acne treatment may involve a topical product such as Retin-A or a combination of products and medication or light therapy. Depending on the type and severity of acne, mild chemical peels may also reduce inflammation and inhibit clogged pores.
