What is a Brazilian Butt Lift – BBL?

A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. The procedure involves two main steps:

  1. Liposuction: Fat is removed from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, or lower back, through liposuction. This step helps contour the donor areas, creating a more aesthetically pleasing overall shape.
  2. Fat Transfer: The extracted fat is then purified and injected into the buttocks at various depths to achieve the desired shape, size, and contour. The surgeon carefully sculpts the buttocks to create a more rounded, lifted appearance.

The BBL is often chosen by individuals who want to enhance their curves without using implants, as it uses the patient’s own fat, making it a more natural option.

An ultrasound may be used during a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery to enhance safety and precision. The primary reasons for using ultrasound during the procedure include:

  1. Avoiding Blood Vessels: One of the biggest risks associated with BBL surgery is the potential for fat embolism, which occurs when fat is accidentally injected into large blood vessels and travels to the lungs or heart. Ultrasound allows the surgeon to visualize the underlying structures, including blood vessels, in real-time, reducing the risk of injecting fat into these vessels.
  2. Accurate Fat Placement: Ultrasound helps the surgeon precisely place the fat at the correct depth within the buttock tissue. This ensures the fat is injected into the correct  deep subcutaneous layer, enhancing the overall safety and effectiveness of the procedure.
  3. Enhanced Safety: By using ultrasound, the surgeon can monitor the procedure more closely and make adjustments as needed, improving overall safety. This real-time imaging provides an additional layer of safety, particularly in a procedure known for its risks.
  4. Reduced Complications: The use of ultrasound can help reduce the likelihood of complications such as fat necrosis (where fat cells die) and uneven fat distribution, leading to better outcomes and a more natural appearance.

However, the procedure does carry risks, particularly related to fat embolism, which can be life-threatening if fat is accidentally injected into or near large veins and travels to the lungs or heart. Proper technique and choosing a qualified, experienced board-certified  surgeon are crucial for minimizing these risks.
