What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that achieves smaller, shapelier breasts through the careful removal of fat and glandular tissue that makes up the breast mound. During the procedure, the skin around the breast is also tightened to support the new shape. The primary objective of breast reduction is to achieve breast proportions that are harmonious to a woman’s overall shape. The results of this procedure can last a lifetime and can include not only enhanced physical shape but also greater physical comfort. Each surgery is tailored to the individual to bring more balance and beauty to the body.
Who Are The Ideal Candidates For Breast Reduction Surgery?
Women whose breast size impacts their daily lives are often good candidates for breast reduction surgery. Some of the concerns that can be addressed with this procedure include:
- Poor posture due to excess weight at the front of the chest.
- Shoulder, neck, and back pain caused by a muscle strain.
- Tingling or numbness caused by nerve compression related to excess breast weight.
- A feeling of heaviness or difficulty breathing due to chest size.
- Skin irritation or indentations on the shoulders due to bra straps.
- Skin irritation below the breasts due to skin-on-skin contact.
- Chronic migraines.
The reasons for breast reduction surgery are very personal and aren’t always limited to physical complaints alone. Many women who have large breasts also suffer emotionally, experiencing unwanted looks and comments that make them feel self-conscious. Creating a more balanced figure through breast reduction can also mean creating more confidence in social and professional environments.
Ideal candidates for plastic surgery are in good physical health, do not smoke, and understand the expectations their surgeon has for their outcome and recovery. Breast surgery is not recommended for any person who has not reached full breast development. Most patients over the age of 18 have achieved this.
Reasons For Breast Reduction Surgery
Overly large breasts can cause severe back and neck pain resulting in long-term physical distress. It can cause skeletal abnormalities, posture problems, skin irritations, and even difficulty breathing. In this circumstance, breast reduction surgery poses an ideal solution.
Breast Reduction Benefits
Although the incentive for breast reduction may begin with health concerns, there is an additional benefit of improved cosmetic enhancement. A breast reduction will reduce the size and alter the shape of your breasts to a more pleasing appearance. The end result will be lighter, smaller, and more proportionate breasts that are more in keeping with your frame and body shape.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure performed in an accredited surgery center. Patients must arrange transportation to and from the facility. General anesthesia is administered, which means patients rest comfortably throughout the procedure. General anesthesia creates a deep sleep state and also “turns off” pain receptors for several hours.
This surgery typically involves incisions around the areola, the colored part of the breast. Incisions are made just inside the pigmented area so resulting scars are more discreet. A second incision may be made from the areola down the center of the breast, ending at the inframammary crease. This is referred to as a lollipop incision and is known to achieve optimal aesthetic results. Incisions allow access to the fatty and glandular tissue of the breasts, which is strategically sculpted to create a smaller, shapely contour.
Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery
Patients are released from the surgery center after a few hours of recovery during which they are monitored by staff. Release occurs when the patient has regained a sufficient degree of alertness after anesthesia. Because anesthesia effects may cause grogginess and nausea, it is recommended that patients have someone stay with them for at least 24 hours.
Soreness and swelling are common side effects of breast reduction surgery. These are managed with a surgical bra with gentle compression and prescription pain medication. Patients should take their medication as directed, even if they are not feeling a lot of pain. Rest is important during the first several days of recovery, but there is no need for bed rest. Patients should walk short distances several times a day to maintain the circulation that is needed to deliver oxygen and nutrients to healing tissue.
Approximately one week after surgery, patients may return to the office for a brief follow-up. Stitches may be removed at this appointment and replaced with gauze or medical tape. Patients are often ready to return to work after this appointment. Strenuous activities and lifting should be avoided for several weeks.

How Much Does Breast Reduction Surgery Cost?
Breast reduction cost may vary slightly from one patient to another. In general, the cost is calculated based on various fees, including the surgeon’s office and operative fees, medications, medical supplies, the surgical center fees, and costs related to anesthesia. Additionally, the cost is influenced by the extensiveness of the surgical process and may include complementary procedures, such as a breast reduction coupled with a breast lift. When you visit our office for your consultation, you will receive the information you need to make a confident decision about your treatment plan.
Is Breast Reduction Surgery Covered By Insurance?
We can understand why breast reduction surgery can feel medically necessary. The weight and position of enlarged breasts can cause several uncomfortable problems. In most cases, medical insurance does not cover the cost of breast reduction surgery. To obtain coverage may not be impossible, but can take time. If you want breast reduction and are interested in having your procedure covered by insurance, you need to contact your insurance provider to discuss whether or not this is an option and, if it is, what prerequisites are necessary for the procedure to be approved. This can vary from one carrier to another.
